Merge Tags

What are merge tags?

Merge tags are used to personalise content. They allow you to insert information specific to the individual recipient into your email or website. For example, you can use merge tags to automatically insert the recipient's name into the text.

Using merge tags can greatly improve the effectiveness of your communication efforts.

It is important to ensure that all merge tag information is accurate and up-to-date in your data source, which could be your Email Service Provider's database or your own database.

Examples of merge tags

  • {{FNAME}} for the recipient's first name
  • {{LNAME}} for the recipient's last name
  • {{COMPANY}} for the recipient's company/organization
  • {{EMAIL}} for the recipient's email address
  • {{ADDRESS}}, {{CITY}}, {{STATE}}, {{ZIP}} for the recipient's mailing address
  • Custom merge tags can also be created using merge fields from your ESP's database. This allows for even more personalisation options, such as including unique member or customer IDs, membership expiration dates, and purchase history.

How to use merge tags in OKZest

To use merge tags in OKZest, select 'Add Content', 'Dynamic Text' and enter the merge tag options:

  • ESP Merge tag - enter a merge tag format supported by your Email Service Provider (ESP)
  • URL Parameter - this will be displayed in the design screen and share URL
  • Text - allows you to put text before or after the dynamic text
  • Default Text - if you don't have substitute text for the merge tag (e.g. you don't have the first name of everyone on your email distribution list) this allows you to present nothing or pre-defined text (e.g. guest, friend, ...)
